This past weekend was a wonderful whirlwind!
We took a chance on a new show, and the payoff was worth the risk! Many thanks to "The Goblin Queen" and her minions for putting on an awesome "alternative" show! We were a little nervous prepping for the show, as it was a new venue, a new show, and a new crowd for us. While we are both into things that are a little off the beaten path (Sabrina is an old "GOTH" & DIY Punk from way back when the only way to dye your hair Kool-Aid red was to use ACTUAL Kool-Aid: Mohawks hairdo's did their stuff with eggwhites, Elmer's Glue, and Aquanet, and eyeliner had to be heated with a lighter. Taylor is a newer version of an "old soul" who can tell you more about The Clash, The Ramones, and Johnny Rotten than you'd ever want to know), a quick look at our stuff is as far from "dark" as you can get! Setting up at the show, we loved the nerdwear, geekwear, VooDoo dolls and more popping up around us, and frequently referred to our own booth as the "booth for the Sesame Street Kids who never grew up". Our Colorful Creatures stood out like a neon lighthouse on a dark and stormy night. You know what your mom always told you about being "YOURSELF"??? So true! Just love who you are, and it shows. People respond. What a wonderful day full of squeals of joy from happy customers! Girls in black bat wings and corpse complexions giggling excitedly over glove dolls and cute fleece monsters. Tough guys in black eyeliner, pirate bandanas, and skull tattoos willingly trying on Fuzzy Monster hats and T.A.R.D.I.S. fezzes! And the vendors...the NICEST bunch of people you could ever want to chat with! Our theory: line up two people on the street- one dressed in spiked leather with purple hair, and the other clean cut and wearing top-of-the-line designer gear, who do you think will help the elderly lady across the street? Leather Lad every time! NEVER judge a book by its cover! Our favorite moment of the day was thanks to our dear friend JEAN. Darling Couple in their somewhat later years was walking near the booth when we happened to notice the gray-haired gentleman's t-shirt, and realized it was a "BATS DAY" shirt, so we started up a conversation. Turns out that although this charmin pair didn't look like what you'd expect at an "Alternative" event, they were Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall on the inside! And the only reason they'd found out about the show is that they happened to be at WalMart and noticed the adorable Zombie Babies our friend JEAN had brought to work. They ended up snapping a picture of the flier she'd been carrying and headed on over! And BOUGHT from us! THANKS, JEAN! So let that be a lesson to you young whippersnappers... even us OLD FOLKS are cool, even if you can't tell by looking at us!
